First AI Data Center in the Amazon: Elea Unveils Project in Belém Powered by 100% Renewable Energy with Expansion Plans of Up to 100 MW

The race to build the infrastructure that will power the next generation of Artificial Intelligence has reached a new milestone in Brazil. Elea Data Centers has announced the construction of the first carrier-neutral AI-focused data center in the Amazon region, a project that will be built in Belém, Pará, and powered entirely by 100% renewable energy supplied by AXIA Energia.

Belém Enters the Artificial Intelligence Map

Scheduled to begin operations in the second quarter of 2027, the new facility will launch with an initial capacity of 7.5 MW, already backed by major anchor customers. However, the project has been designed for significant expansion and could eventually reach 100 MW in future development phases.

The initiative represents a major milestone for Brazil’s digital infrastructure by decentralizing investments that have traditionally been concentrated in the country’s Southeast region and connectivity hubs such as Fortaleza.

Elea Data Centers will operate the facility, while AXIA Energia will provide all the electricity required under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), ensuring that the data center runs exclusively on renewable energy.

The facility will be built adjacent to AXIA’s Miramar high-voltage substation, providing high electrical reliability, operational efficiency, and simplified expansion opportunities.

Project Was Conceived with COP30 in Mind

According to Alessandro Lombardi, CEO and founder of Elea Data Centers, the decision to invest in Belém dates back to 2024, when the city was officially selected to host COP30.

“Expanding into Belém is a strategic move to broaden the geographic distribution of our platform and strengthen Brazil’s digital infrastructure. The project began taking shape in 2024 when Belém was confirmed as the host city for COP30, highlighting the region’s potential to attract sustainable, long-term investments.

Northern Brazil will play a key role in the country’s digital ecosystem by serving as an alternative route to Fortaleza, helping reduce the digital divide while boosting regional competitiveness. BEL1 reinforces our pioneering position and represents a lasting legacy of COP30 by demonstrating the importance of developing sustainable digital infrastructure in strategic and remote regions.”

Renewable Energy Will Be One of the Project’s Main Pillars

AXIA Energia will be responsible for supplying uninterrupted renewable electricity to the new data center, strengthening its position as one of Brazil’s leading providers of energy infrastructure for the rapidly expanding data center market.

Beyond the initial supply agreement, the company will also participate in planning future expansion phases that could increase the site’s total capacity to 100 MW.

According to Ítalo Freitas, Vice President of Energy Trading and Solutions at AXIA Energia:

“Our partnership with Elea reinforces AXIA’s role as a provider of integrated energy solutions, enabling innovative and strategic projects that support Brazil’s digital transformation. As the largest 100% renewable energy company in the Southern Hemisphere, AXIA has a robust portfolio capable of delivering reliable and sustainable energy for a project of this magnitude, enhancing connectivity while attracting investments that contribute to the economic development of the Amazon region.”

Northern Brazil Gains Strategic Importance in Connectivity

In addition to renewable energy availability, Belém is becoming an increasingly strategic location for Brazil’s national connectivity infrastructure.

The city is already connected through the Norte Conectado (Connected North) program and also benefits from expanding coastal fiber-optic routes linked to international submarine cable systems connecting Latin America and Europe.

This positions the capital of Pará as a complementary alternative to Fortaleza, increasing route diversity, reducing operational risks, and strengthening the resilience of Brazil’s digital infrastructure.

Expansion Coincides with the Global AI Boom

The announcement comes as demand for AI-optimized data centers continues to accelerate worldwide.

Generative AI models require facilities capable of supporting high-density computing, massive power availability, and low-latency connectivity to serve hyperscalers, cloud providers, and enterprise AI applications.

With the new project, Elea continues its national expansion strategy. The company already operates nine data centers across five major metropolitan regions in Brazil and is currently developing Rio AI City, a massive AI-focused campus expected to deliver 1.5 GW of total capacity in Rio de Janeiro.

The Amazon Could Become Brazil’s Next Digital Economy Hub

By combining renewable energy, international connectivity, and a strategic geographic location, Belém is emerging as one of Brazil’s future digital infrastructure hubs.

Beyond supporting growing demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing, the project aims to attract new technology investments, strengthen the regional economy, reduce inequalities in digital infrastructure distribution, and establish Northern Brazil as a key player in the country’s next phase of technological transformation.
